I’m sure Dr. Littlefield attended the event at the request of the organizers for his knowledge and expertise on the “history” of the so called Five Civilized Tribes known as the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek and Seminole. It is also safe to assume he accepted their invitation with the full knowledge his contribution to a conference with the theme of "fiction" writing and story telling" was not exactly his area of work but he attended despite these difference for what I believe is his never ending support for the Native American community as it wrestles with the issues of history, culture and identity. Mary Doria Russell says Cleveland's a good town for writers and more: My ...
Mary Doria Russell of Lyndhurst has set novels from Italy to the Wild West to Cleveland. Ron Howard recently signed to direct her "Doc," about Doc Holliday, for an HBO pilot.
Q. Present company excepted, does Cleveland have good writers?
A. There's an extraordinary range of literature being written in this region, and the quality is first rate. Cleveland is really good about recognizing its artists because of the Arts Council.
Q. Do local writers help each other out?
A. Yes. [Mystery writer] Les Roberts is very gracious and generous. He gave me very good advice about a book being optioned for a movie: "Take the money and sit in the closet and don't come out until it's over."
Q. Tell us about some local lore in your novels.
A. "Dreamers of the Day" was 2/3 set in Cleveland. It's in the 1920s and '30s, some in Little Italy, some in Cedar Hill. A lot of the buildings are still there. The character Mildred Rosenquist really did work in Halle's department store and really dated Bob Hope, although a couple years earlier. I had my main characters' parents develop a zipper foot for White sewing machines.
